Closest Relative is the brainchild of Columbus musician Jack O'Connell. Jack has been a steady part of the Columbus music scene since 2013, playing guitar with bands like In Silent Movies, Jackie Stabb, and Miranova.
He had started writing some of his own songs, with the idea to start a solo project and release an EP, when on May 6th, 2015, he was in a motorcycle accident that crushed his left hand, resulting in two amputated fingers. After months of surgeries and rehab, he had returned to the guitar, developing a style that mostly utilizes two fingers.
He went to work recording his debut EP "Messes". Recorded in the attics and basements of Columbus, Ohio, "Messes" is largely about personal struggles. It's carried by intricate guitar work, progressive structures, and earnest lyrics.
