Live music by Latoya Bird
Latoya Byrd-Williams is a proud Savannah native whose musical journey began in a home filled with rhythm, harmony, and creative expression. Her mother, a locally renowned gospel singer, and her father, a percussionist and alto saxophonist with deep jazz influences, cultivated an environment where music was a natural part of everyday life.
At just nine years old, Latoya discovered her father’s saxophone tucked away in the back of a closet—a moment that revealed her natural gift for playing by ear. She joined the school band in the fifth grade and continued performing throughout high school, developing a deep appreciation for a wide range of musical styles.
Latoya carried her love for the saxophone into adulthood, performing in churches, at weddings, private events, and community gatherings. Although she had long relied on her strong ear, she felt called to strengthen her foundation in music literacy. In 2017, she joined the Effingham Community Orchestra, a step that expanded her musicianship in meaningful ways.
Since becoming part of this vibrant ensemble, Latoya has broadened her repertoire to include tenor and soprano saxophones, sharpened her sight‑reading skills, and continued her pursuit of becoming a well-rounded, versatile musician. Her journey reflects a lifelong passion for music, continuous growth, and the joy of sharing her talent with the community.
